Sound Log   These are the sounds that Charlotte has recorded.  Banging on a washing machine - Sounded good but peaked a couple of times Moving a glass on the table -Really good   Banging hand against the banister - Created a tinny echo sound Spoon in a bowl - Created a tinny effect Fridge door banging - Peaked  Scrailing the radiator - Gave us an echo with a slight tinny effect Scratching the sofa - created a deep scratching sound  Scratching a laptop - Created a higher pitched scratch sound Tapping on a table  - Worked well Static from the radio - Used for the glitch and as static at the start of the film Closing freezer draws - useful in creating the glitch sound as it was a deep tone.  Flicking a plastic bottle - Added a higher pitch to the second glitch sound Door banging shut Peaked Laughing - Used at the end of the film to contrast the makeup being removed.  From these sounds I created two separate glitch sounds t...

Contributors

Contributors   Here is the contributor research I conducted. I approached Joshua as I knew that he had facial hair, a property we were looking for in this film. I was also fairly confident that he would be up for the role as we have joked about applying make-up in the past and he was part of one of my first year films so I know hes's not camera shy. I also contacted Frances Wilkinson, my flat mate, as she perfectly fits the stereotypical pretty girl with the long blonde hair. Thankfully Joshua and Frances were available on the same days so they were the perfect pair to work with as we could decide on a shoot day and a re-shoot.

Evaluation 1-2 Minute Film

Image
Evaluation 1-2 Minute Film Our 1-2 minute film, Reflection had a range of strengths and weaknesses. The original idea varied from our final result. The initial intentions for the film was to begin on a close up of the photograph. This shot would last a few seconds so that the audience can establish the stereotype being presented. From this we would zoom out to show that it is in fact a photograph and will reveal the whole picture of the same girl wearing a different stereotypical outfit holding the photograph. As this process takes place the photograph should begin to burn, erasing the stereotype. However; this wasn't achieved. When looking through our shots we found that every single shot was a zoom and that they were all different rates and unfortunately none of them started zoomed in fully on the photograph. We tried to arrange a re-shoot but our actress was only available on Sunday 12th November. This meant that we wouldn't be able to continue with our original plan. Th...

Sound Design Components

Sound Design Components For the sound design I was hoping to create a track to sound like a burning fire. I found this a lot more difficult than I first thought. Each time I attempted to make the track I found that it sounded a lot like rain. However I kept working on it and found some sounds online that I mixed with the sizzling Charlotte had recorded. Working with the volumes and the order of the sound, in a short amount of time I created something I am relatively happy with. I was hoping to slow down the cracks in the sizzle but was unable to as I couldn't figure out how to do it on pro tools and I was working on it late so unfortunately there was no one around to ask for assistance. For the boiling water I was hoping to make it sound like a science experiment by mixing the sound with that of clanging beakers and possibly a Bunsen burner. I then decided that this was too much as it took away from the images. Therefore I decided to just keep the boiling water. The coffe...

Sound Log

Here is a log of the sounds we recorded for the 1-2 minute piece. Sizzling of food in a pan - Recorded and used to create the fire sound Boiling water - Very good, used for the science experiment Flicking through books - very quiet, used for the library along with throwing them back onto the shelves Coffee machine - Really good, used for the waitress. Weight machines - Put together with the treadmill for sounds of a gym. Treadmill - Really good paired with the weights for the athlete. Passers by in the town centre - used for the popular girl. Waterfalls at the peace gardens - Very good but not used as we no longer included the backgrounds.   Lighter - Unusable, couldn't tell what it was and didn't create a viable fire sound.

Treatment

Treatment Here is the link to our 1-2 minute film, Reflection: https://vimeo.com/242736310 Title: Reflection Stylistic Approach: Structural/Formal  Our 1-2 minute film, Reflection, is based on general stereotypes. We are focusing on looks through use of costume. For example, you expect someone smart, who you may stereotype as a ‘nerd’, to wear specific clothing e.g. a shirt, bow tie, a jumper and glasses. We will explore these stereotypes through the costumes our actress will wear.              During the film she will stand wearing a specific stereotypical outfit. Having taken multiple photos of the actress in these different outfits, for example an athlete, a waitress, a nerd… She will hold one of the photos in an opposing outfit to the one she is wearing. The photo will burn, implying that no one is just one thing, they can fit into many stereotypes all at the same time. Working title: Diverge Length: 5-10 min...

Relevant Theory

Relevant Theory Looking into, Film and Stereotype: A challenge for cinema and theory, I found a few examples that link to stereotypes and stereotypical female portrayals in film and media.  “Nevertheless, when they do make it onto the silver or small screen, their portrayals can undermine their presence by being “hyper-attractive” “the need for a shift: away from creating females as adornment, enticement, or with inclination to romance as the main or exclusive personality trait or motivator” ( Dr, Stacy L Smith Conference 2008) Talking about women in films, this states that women rarely make it onto the "silver screen" and that when they do they have no personality. They are just an object of romance and lust. Something to fight over. Although women have progressed in recent years, becoming strong lead characters and battling difficult story lines, they are still stereotyped into specific groups.   “Within these theoretical contexts, this approach sugges...

Film Theories

Film Theories Our experimental films fit well into the Feminist Film Theory and the Formalist Film Theory.  "Theoretical film criticism derived from feminist politics and feminist theory. Feminists have many approaches to cinema analysis, regarding the film elements analysed and their theoretical underpinnings." I feel that our films relate to this theory as we are creating a message about stereotypes, specifically gender stereotypes in Diverge. However; the formalist theory "film study that is focused on the formal, or technical, elements of a film: i.e. lighting, scoring, sound and set design, use of colour, shot composition, and editing." also applies well to our two films. Diverge especially fits into the formalist theory as we used a two camera set up. We specifically created a world where we were focused on our actor. We then created 'his world' where we would see 'his camera' and therefore potentially breaking the rules of cinema and ...
